Professor Jorge Soares is a distinguished Portuguese physician and academic renowned for his extensive contributions to pathology, oncology, bioethics, and medical education. His career, spanning several decades, encompasses significant roles in academia, research, and leadership within various scientific and ethical organizations.​

Professor Soares earned his medical degree and specialized in pathological anatomy. His early research, particularly utilizing electron microscopy, laid the foundation for his future endeavors in pathology and oncology. He joined the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Lisbon, where he led the Department of Morphological Pathology, establishing a team dedicated to patient care, teaching, and research. ​

Throughout his academic career, Professor Soares held several prominent positions:​

1. Full Professor of Pathological Anatomy: He served at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (1996–2004), and at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon (2004–2012). ​

2. Director of the Lisbon Delegation of the National Institute of Legal Medicine: From 2001 to 2003, he led this institution, contributing to advancements in forensic medicine. ​

3. Invited Full Professor of Legal Medicine, Ethics, and Medical Law: He held this position at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon (2001–2003), emphasizing the integration of ethical considerations in medical practice. ​

Professor Soares has authored over 200 scientific works, with approximately 80% published in international indexed journals focusing on pathology and oncology, particularly concerning head and neck and breast cancers. His research has garnered significant citations, reflecting its impact on the scientific community. ​

His involvement in professional societies is extensive:​

- President of the Lisbon Society of Medical Sciences: He led this esteemed society from 2003 to 2005. ​

- President of the Portuguese Society of Pathological Anatomy: Serving from 1997 to 1999, he contributed to the advancement of pathology in Portugal. ​

- President of the Portuguese Society of Senology: From 2004 to 2006, he focused on the study and treatment of breast diseases. ​

Professor Soares has played a pivotal role in ethical and health-related councils:​

- Member of the National Council of Ethics for the Life Sciences (CNECV): He served from 2003 to 2007 and again from 2015 onwards, becoming the elected President in 2016. ​
